今日は、御書ではないのですが、
仏法では大事な概念「十界」の英語バージョンを紹介して行こうと思います。
仏法には、以下の十界が存在します。
- 仏界
- 菩薩界
- 縁覚界
- 声聞界
- 天界
- 人界
- 修羅界
- 畜生界
- 餓鬼界
- 地獄界
それぞれは、人の心を表しており、
餓鬼界であれば、あれも欲しい、これも欲しいと駄々っ子みたいな欲求不満な心の状態を言います。
1の仏界が最高であり、10の地獄界が最低です。
人の心は常に移りがちですが、
仏法では、できるだけ1の仏界の境地に達することを一つの目標としています。
まずはじめに、「十界」は英語で、”the Ten Worlds” と表現します。
直訳ですね！笑
では、肝心の十界の英語での表現を見ていきましょう！
- 仏界・・・the world of Buddhahood
- 菩薩界・・・the world of cause-awakened ones / the world of Realization
- 縁覚界・・・the world of Learning
- 声聞界・・・the world of voice-hearers
- 天界・・・the world of heaven / the world of Rapture (Joy)
- 人界・・・the world of humanity
- 修羅界・・・the world of asuras / the world of Anger
- 畜生界・・・the world of animals / the world of Animality
- 餓鬼界・・・the world of hungry spritits / the world of Hunger
- 地獄界・・・the world of hell
また、十界は、いくつかのグループにまとめて呼ばれることがあります。
10 – 8 までをまとめて「三悪道」”the three evil paths” と呼ばれます。
10 – 7 までをまとめて「四悪趣」”the four evil paths” と呼ばれます。
10 – 5 までをまとめて「六道」”the six paths” と呼ばれます。
10 – 2 までをまとめて「九界」”the nine worlds” と呼ばれます。
また、4と3を「二乗」”the two vehicles” と呼び、
4 – 2を「三乗」と呼び、
1のみを「一乗」と呼びます。
